Day 1: Learning about the music & instruments
Students will be given a handout which guides them through a website about music of the Renaissance. (http://www.twingroves.district96.k12.il.us/ Renaissance/Town/Music/Music.html)The wonderful thing about this site is that they have the instruments shown in pictures with accompanying sound samples, which the students can listen to on headphones individually.

Day 2: Listening to the music
The second day students will listen to selected songs from the CD given to us during the institute. They will try to determine how many voices they hear, what instruments, whether the music is secular or religious and what tone the music has. When finished, 4 volunteers will come to the center of the room to learn a Renaissance dance. The dance is short and simple enough for middle school kids and allows for other groups to come up and try their hand at it in front of the group. The prior year I did it as a whole-group activity, which was a nightmare, and I found this worked much better.
