Introduction: Machiavelli's political treatise was written (in Italian) in 1513 in Florence during the Renaissance time period. It was, in essence, a procedural guide for any ruler of that era, but was specifically written for Lorenzo "The Magnificent" de Medici of the powerful Florentine family. We will be studying the treatise(n. a systematic exposition or argument in writing including a methodical discussion of the facts and principles involved and conclusions reached) both for its thematic content and its style. Themes will include: power, generosity, wealth, social welfare, and others. Stylistically The Prince encompasses both ELA Standards E2d (Narrative Procedure) and E2e (Persuasive Essay). We will also be comparing issues brought out in Machiavelli's work to those of today.
