The Worlds of the Renaissance Projects, 2000

The Unicorn

Nancy Massand

Introduction: The following project is a proposal for a novel for young readers. It includes the first six chapters and an outline for the remainder of the work, as well as several links to sites containing Renaissance topics covered in the story. Inspired by the Unicorn Tapestries on exhibit in The Cloisters in New York City, the story speculates on the "missing piece" in the fifth tapestry. Renaissance topics underlying the fiction are the tapestries themselves, the legend of the unicorn, disease and epidemics, marriage and family customs, craft guilds, and convents. The story is aimed at middle school readers, and you may feel free to duplicate it for classroom use if you so desire.
