The Worlds of the Renaissance Projects, 2000

Introduction to Renaissance Art

Rationale: Historians use various methods to analyze and evaluate change over time. Primary sources serve as a basis for most of this research. Art is a source that can help historians view societal, economic, cultural changes over time. For this assignment, students will compare Byzantine paintings with art from the Renaissance. In doing this, students will evaluate the changes that occurred between these two periods.

This lesson is designed to be used as a segue between a Middle Ages unit and a Renaissance unit. However, it could be used at any time during a Renaissance unit to check students' understanding of the material already covered in class. Because art was such an important element of the Renaissance, it serves as a great tool to use in this unit.
