Qualities and Virtues of Leadership

Cross-cultural Referencing: Ming Dynasty and Renaissance Europe

The International School in Bellevue, Washington currently offers a two-year non-Western history program for the 9th and 10th grade years. My colleagues and I are in the process of modifying the course to reflect the spirit of the new Advanced Placement World History exam. The exam will contain 70 percent non-Western histories and 30 percent Western. But after looking at early materials released by The College Board, a solid grounding in Western history seems to be clear. A few school syllabi printed in the new Teacher's Guide also have two-year programs to accommodate the Western base necessary for the exam. The yet to be held exam has an ambitious syllabus and will require students to follow philosophical and political themes cross-culturally either chronologically or thematically. The National Standards for World History will call this the Patterns of Change Model.
