GROUPS: Each group will consist of three members. Each member is responsible for her/his own work and will be graded individually. Should a group member be absent on the day of presentation, the remaining members will go on with the presentation, regardless.
READING: Each member will read the excerpt of Thomas More's Utopia (Book II).
Each group member must complete the following:
a) Read the selection and answer the corresponding questions.
b) Write a one-page personal reaction to the selection.
CREATION: Each member is responsible for the creation of one aspect of an original utopian society. You may choose an aspect of society that was mentioned in the reading, or you may create your own (upon instructor's approval).
Each group member must complete the following:
a) Write a four to five paragraph essay describing an aspect of an original utopian
society.b) Present to the class (with the group) your creation. Each presenter should outline her/his specific societal aspect or the class. He/she should be able to answer questions about the details of that aspect, and should use visual aids in her/his presentation. Each individual's presentation should last between 3 and 4 minutes (group total: 9-12 minutes). You may use any format to convey your information; the more creative, the better.
The group is responsible for the following together:
- a)Choose a name for your utopian society. This name can be in any language, and should reflect the nature of the society.
- b)Create a symbol, flag or crest, which properly represents the society.
- c)Develop a common vision of how the utopian society will operate. Each aspect of the society should work together with the others.
- d)Group members should, when possible, aid each other in the preparation of presentations.
GRADING: Students will be graded individually on the following assignments and criteria:
a) Correct completion of questions for the reading section....10%
b) One-page reaction to the reading.....................................15%
c) Essay description of original societal aspect......................30%
