CHRISTINE DE PIZAN 1365-1431

(1405) Wrote Book of the City of Ladies

*Anything approaching equality for women waited until the late 20th century to appear. De Pizan, in every sense a Renaissance feminist, wrote in defense of her own sex and the unjust treatment of women. In her book, she is approached by three ladies representing Reason, Rectitude, and Justice. It is their job to balance things out in the world and they promise to help Christine build a city of ladies as a refuge and defense against all assailants of women.
"Do you know why women know less?", asks Christine.

"Without the slightest doubt", responds Reason. "It is because they are not involved in many things, but stay at home, where it is enough for them to run the household, and there is nothing which so instructs a reasonable creature as the exercise and experience of many different things."
