FRANCESCO PETRARCH
|
|
*This Italian poet loved books and hunted all
France and Italy to form an extensive private library
which he made available to all scholars. This was
when most books were locked away behind
monastery walls. Because of his openness to classical
culture many scholars began to study original Greek
and Roman texts, discovering that their own
translated versions contained many mistakes. They
re-discovered ideas that had been lost for thousands
of years.

"If burning far away, and freezing near,
Are signs that Love consumes me to the core,
Yours, lady, is the fault and mine the loss."
