NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI 1469-1527

(1513) Wrote The Prince

*Wrote The Prince, a "how-to" book with tips for staying in power by using strength and cunning i.e. "The end justifies the means". Read by Napoleon (slept with it under his pillow), Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin, this book was very influential. In it he advised rulers to make their states strong by using any means possible - even if it were immoral or unethical. "Machiavellian" came to be a term to describe someone cunning and ruthless.
"It is much safer to be feared than loved...for love is held by a chain of obligation which, men being selfish, is broken whenever it serves their purposes; but fear is maintained by a dread of punishment which never fails."
