ISABELLA d'ESTE 1503-1563 Letters
*Called by some the "first lady of the world," Isabella attracted artists and intellectuals to the court and put together one of the finest libraries in all of Italy. Like many works by female humanists, Della vera tranquillita remains largely unknown. Female humanists achieved fame (and notoriety) in their own time, but their accomplishments, were not generally taken seriously. The notion of innate male superiority held strong.
"Her numerous letters to friends family, princes, and artists all over Europe reveal her political knowledge, as well as a good sense of humor."
