*This Dutch humanist influenced European letters
profoundly. He championed church reform but
opposed the Protestant Reformation remaining a
loyal Catholic. As a result, he and Martin Luther
became bitter enemies. He humorously
criticized aspects of his society that he believed
were most in need of reform. He was particularly
hash on the abuses in the church and singled out the
monks for special treatment. His friends included
Henry VIII and Thomas More. He combined vast
learning with a fine style, keen humor, moderation,
and tolerance.
