DESIDERIUS ERASMUS 1466?-1536

(1511) Published In Praise of Folly

*This Dutch humanist influenced European letters profoundly. He championed church reform but opposed the Protestant Reformation remaining a loyal Catholic. As a result, he and Martin Luther became bitter enemies. He humorously criticized aspects of his society that he believed were most in need of reform. He was particularly hash on the abuses in the church and singled out the monks for special treatment. His friends included Henry VIII and Thomas More. He combined vast learning with a fine style, keen humor, moderation, and tolerance.

3 pts: Known as "Prince of the Humanists".

2 pts: Very brave in writing about the need for improvement in the Church but never wanted to become Protestant.

1 pt: "Thomas More, I have called my book Encomium Moriae (Greek title) because of your name, which comes as near to the word for folly as you are far from the meaning of it."

"Monks insist that everything be done in precise detail...Just so many knots must be on each shoe and the shoelace must be of only one color,...and they can sleep only the specified number of hours per day...They think that they are superior to all people and will be rewarded in heaven."
