NICOLAUS COPERNICUS 1473-1543

(1543) Printed On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres

* Just before dying printed his On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres in which he states that the earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun. In 1616, more than 72 years after his death, the Church declared the Copernican theory heresy and forbade Catholics to read his book.
"He took the first step in destroying the Ptolemaic conception of a geocentric universe and wrote that the sun, not the earth, was at the center."
