GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO 1313-1375

(1353) Published the Decameron, a collection of 100 witty tales set against the somber backdrop of the Black Death

*An Italian poet, storyteller, and humanist whose Decameron showed the medieval courtly themes giving way to modern society. After meeting Petrarch, he devoted his life to the study of Greek and other humanistic concerns, producing important critical works in anthropology, biography, and mythology.

3 pts: The prelude of his book describes the effects of the Black Death in Florence.

2 pts: The book's ten characters, between 18 and 28 years old, plan a trip to a country house to lessen their chances of infection.

1 pt: It is agreed that each of the ten will tell a merry story on each day of the outing. They stay in the country 10 days hence the title of the book, from the Greek deka hemerai, ten days.

"[Ten Days] remains one of the masterpieces of world literature. Its prose set a standard that Italian literature has never surpassed. It is a book of the love of life. Despite the horrors of the Black Death, the author found the courage to see beauty, humor, goodness, and joy still walking the earth."
