  1. You must type (double spaced) a 5 - 8 page paper on the history of cartography.

  2. The following subtitles must be included throughout your paper in the order as they appear below.

  3. You must answer all (or more) of the questions listed below each subtitle.

  4. You must include a "Works Cited" page with at least 2 sources. (Consider using the Internet - it is quite a valuable resource)

MAPS IN ANCIENT TIMES - 2000 B.C. TO 200 A.D.
(i.e. Greeks, Babylonian, Romans)

1) Find and elaborate on one example of map making from any group of people (or any person) anywhere in the world.

How were maps constructed? What was the perception of the world during ancient times?

2) What is the importance of Ptolemy and his role in cartography? What significant piece of writing influenced map making throughout the years to come and how did it affect them?

MIDDLE AGES - 10TH C. T0 14TH C.

1) How did the art of cartography change in the Middle Ages? Provide at least two examples of change.

2) Discuss two types of maps or sea charts used throughout the Middle Ages.

i.e. Zonal maps, T-O maps, Sallust Manuscript

3) Attach, as an appendix, copies of any two map examples from the Middle Ages.

LATE MIDDLE AGES ~ RENAISSANCE - 14TH C. TO 16TH C.

1) Who were two primary figures involved in map making and what were their contributions to cartography? (Use at least one page per person)

2) Attach copies of two Renaissance maps in your appendix.

3) Compare and contrast the maps you chose.

*Did you know that the first printed map was a woodcut made in Augsburg, Germany in 1472?

FINAL TASK: You must give a final presentation ( 3 - 6 minutes) on your findings. Include in presentation: the maps from your appendix, a brief explanation/comparison of the maps, and the two primary figures involved in cartography during the Renaissance
