The film screened as an Official Selection (2002) at the Mill Valley (CA), Newport International (RI), and Urbanworld (NY) Film Festivals, as well as at the Auburn International Film and Video Festival for Children and Young Adults in Sydney, Australia. Turusma introduces a high school senior who becomes the first in his family to go to college. CBB produced the film for use as a college guidance tool. Booklist (August 2002) identifies it as "A good choice for sparking discussion about stereotypes, the limits sometimes imposed on African American youth, and college admissions." Video Librarian (September/October 2002) calls it "A useful springboard for discussion, especially for minority youth...Sincerely made." The film's fifteen-minute format allows for screening and discussion in a single class period. To order, call CBB's California Sales Office at (916) 939-9623.

College Admissions Workshops A former Ivy League admissions officer teaches these three modules. Module I (Grades 9-11) focuses on improving one's academic, extracurricular, and standardized testing profile prior to the senior year in order to maximize the chances for success during the college application experience in grade twelve. Module II (Grades 11-12) offers strategic preparation for the Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT I), with the assistance of a nationally renowned mathematics instructor. Module III (Grades 11-12) concentrates on the writing of a successful college application essay.
Introduction to Analytical Writing Participants in grades 8-10 construct the basic elements of a five-paragraph analytical essay, a format that they can use in multiple academic contexts. Skills taught include developing a thesis statement, supporting that statement with evidence, and self- and peer-editing.
Middle School Mathematics - Japanese Style Students in grades 6-8 investigate number patterns and graph linear functions on a coordinate plane. The instructor uses a Japanese teaching style called "Lesson Study" that focuses on student collaborative problem solving rather than teacher-centered instruction.
Middle School Writing Workshops I & II Students in grades 6-8 use journalism to hone their writing skills. In Workshop I, students outline, research, write, and edit an article on a topic and in a journalistic genre of their choice. In Workshop II, each participant researches, outlines, writes, and edits (1) a factual article designed to inform and (2) an opinion piece intended to persuade on self-selected topics. Students learn self- and peer-editing techniques that they can apply to writing in other contexts as well.
MATHCAMP! K-2 students gain exposure to mathematics through integrating enrichment activities into their play and social interaction.
