The Worlds of the Renaissance: Projects - Linda Kimball

Procedure

  1. Students organized in groups discuss the following essential question:
What are the qualities of a good citizen?
This essential question will generate many questions as well as answers. As the discussion takes place, both questions and answers are written down and retained.

  2. Students in groups read and discuss the following excerpts:

  3. Students in their groups answer one more essential question:
What other aspects of a good citizen are important?
  4. Students in their groups gather, collate, and refine ideas answering the two essential questions: "What is a good citizen?" and "What other aspects of a good citizen are important?" Each group appoints a speaker to each part (Part I, Part II, etc.) who is responsible for presenting the group's ideas and answering questions on his/her part.

  5. Once prepared, speakers for Part I are seated in a colloquium and present their group's ideas and questions. Students who are not speaking are encouraged to ask questions and take notes. After Part I speakers are finished, Part II speakers begin, and so on. Oral assessment may be based on presentation, preparation, and audience participation.
